Gordon Meredith Lightfoot, Jr. (1938-2023) è stato un cantautore canadese considerato uno dei pilastri della musica folk e country del suo paese. Nato a Orillia, Ontario, Lightfoot ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale negli anni '60, guadagnandosi rapidamente una reputazione per le sue melodie evocative e i testi poetici che spesso esploravano temi di storia, natura e vita quotidiana canadese. Tra i suoi brani più famosi figurano "If You Could Read My Mind", "Sundown" e "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". Quest'ultima canzone, ispirata al naufragio di una nave sul Lago Superiore, è diventata un classico del folk americano e ha consacrato Lightfoot come uno dei cantautori più importanti del XX secolo. Lightfoot ha collaborato con numerosi artisti, tra cui Bob Dylan e Neil Young, e ha vinto numerosi premi per la sua musica, tra cui il Juno Award per l'artista canadese dell'anno. La sua influenza sulla musica folk canadese è stata profonda e duratura.
