Rakim, pseudonimo di William Michael Griffin Jr. (1968), è considerato uno dei pionieri del rap cosiddetto "conscious rap", caratterizzato da testi introspettivi e messaggi sociali. Nato a Long Island, New York, Rakim ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale negli anni '80 collaborando con DJ Eric B., formando il duo Eric B. and Rakim. Il loro album di debutto, *Paid in Full* (1987), è considerato un capolavoro del genere e ha influenzato profondamente la scena hip-hop mondiale. Rakim è noto per le sue complesse rime, la sua eleganza linguistica e il suo flow innovativo.
