Gang Starr è un gruppo hip hop formatosi a New York nel 1987 da Guru (Keith Edward Elam) e DJ Premier (Edward Barnes). Dopo alcune uscite iniziali con altri membri, il duo si è affermato come una delle più influenti realtà del panorama newyorkese. La loro musica, caratterizzata da testi introspettivi di Guru e beat complessi e innovativi di DJ Premier, ha contribuito a definire lo stile dell'East Coast hip hop degli anni '90. Tra i brani più rappresentativi: "Mass Appeal", "Just to Get By" e "Above the Clouds". Gang Starr ha pubblicato otto album in studio, tra cui il disco d'oro "Hard to Earn" (1994) e l'acclamato "Moment of Truth" (1998). Il gruppo si è sciolto nel 2003 con la morte di Guru.
