Rakim, pseudonimo di William Michael Griffin Jr. (1968), è considerato uno dei pionieri del rap cosiddetto "conscious rap", caratterizzato da testi introspettivi e messaggi sociali. Nato a Long Island, New York, Rakim ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale negli anni '80 collaborando con DJ Eric B., formando il duo Eric B. and Rakim.
