Ha raggiunto la fama negli anni '90 come membro del roster della Bad Boy Records di Sean "Diddy" Combs. Il suo stile musicale si caratterizza per una fusione di hip hop classico e melodie orecchiabili, spesso con influenze gospel. Il suo album di debutto, *Harlem World*, pubblicato nel 1997, ha riscosso un grande successo commerciale, grazie a singoli come "Feel So Good" e "What You Want".
